The United States has welcomed Serbia's announcement to withdraw from the border with Kosovo, following Washington's warnings, although verification of troop movements is impossible.

"We have seen reports that Serbia has withdrawn military personnel and equipment from the border, but we have yet to verify this independently and will seek further confirmation. But if it is true, we welcome it. It's something we asked for last week and it's a step we appreciate," said Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the US State Department.

It was the chief of staff of the Serbian army, General Milan Mojsilovic, who declared that Belgrade had reduced the presence of troops in Kosovo.

"On September 25, the number of military personnel was 8,530 not only to secure the administrative line in the land area, but also as regards the units that are routinely deployed near the border line," declared Mojsilovic.

Mojsilovic and Serbian Defense Minister Milos Vucevic denied the Kosovo government's accusations that the Serbian army had trained the group of 30 people involved in the exchange of fire in the village of Banjska, where a Kosovo Police officer was killed.
