South Korea's top court found Yoon Suk Yeol guilty, removing him from office as president.

The court's decision marks Yoon's formal removal from the presidency after parliament voted to remove him in December 2024.

Yeol's removal took effect immediately, meaning he must now leave the presidential residence, while elections for a new president are also expected to be held.

The eight Constitutional Court judges unanimously decided to uphold Yoon's impeachment - recalling the chaotic night of martial law when he sent troops into parliament and ordered soldiers to "drag out" lawmakers who fought to block the decree, CNN wrote.

"The president had violated the formal process of declaring martial law, violated the rights of lawmakers and violated his duty as head of the armed forces in a 'grave betrayal of the people's trust,'" said acting chief justice Moon Hyung-bae.

In a separate criminal trial, Yoon was arrested on January 15 on charges of leading an uprising, then released in March after a court overturned his arrest warrant - although it did not dismiss the charges.

Yoon thanked his supporters, saying it was an honor to serve as leader and that he regretted that he could not meet the people's expectations, following Friday's decision, which was met with mixed reactions across the South Korean capital.

Meanwhile, Yoon's opponents celebrated outside the courthouse, waving flags and dancing.
