An 80-year-old man living in the Vicenza area of Italy experienced an episode that could have had much more serious consequences due to carelessness in the kitchen. After preparing and eating a sandwich, he began to feel very unwell with symptoms such as stomach pain and vomiting.

The incident occurred yesterday afternoon, when the elderly man decided to eat something light. However, shortly after eating it, he began to feel sick, causing concern in his family. The latter, in an attempt to understand what he had swallowed, checked the ingredients used and there he realized that he had mistakenly spread a cosmetic substance for hair coloring on the bread, confusing it with mayonnaise.

The product in question contained a small amount of ammonia, a substance which, if swallowed, can cause irritation of the gastric mucosa, ulcers and other digestive disorders.

Realizing the seriousness of the situation, emergency services were immediately called. Within minutes, an ambulance arrived at the scene to provide first aid to the elderly man.

Given the man's age and the type of substance ingested, Suem health workers considered it appropriate to consult the Verona Poison Control Center, a regional reference point for poisonings. Following the indications given by the specialists, the 80-year-old was then advised to go to the emergency room to undergo an esophagogastroscopy, a useful test for assessing any damage to the walls of the esophagus and stomach.

Fortunately, the kitchen mistake did not have serious consequences, but the story highlights how important it is to pay attention to the products kept in the kitchen, to avoid similar risks, especially in nursing homes.
