Tension in the north of Kosovo

The decision of the government of Kosovo to implement from August 1 reciprocity on the border with Serbia, preventing the entry of Serbian citizens without an entry-exit document, as well as the one to start the process of removing unofficial license plates from vehicles , is causing tension in the areas inhabited by the Serbian community.

The Kosovo Police has announced that the border points in Jarinje and Bernjak have been closed, due to road blockages, and has called on citizens to use other border points.

Serbs in the north have blocked several roads a few hours before the start of reciprocity measures with documents. KFOR has gone to the field to observe the situation, while in the municipalities in the north, an alarm has been activated that calls for a gathering of citizens.

Meanwhile, increased forces of the Kosovo Special Unit have reached the Iber River bridge, including members of KFOR and the Italian carabinieri.

"The Kosovo police have closed the border for passenger traffic and for vehicles at the Bernjak and Jarinje border crossing points, due to the blockage of the roads in the direction of the Jarinje and Bernjak border crossing points. All citizens are informed to use the other border points for circulation", the police announcement states.

All Serbian citizens who enter Kosovo, from this Monday, will not be allowed to enter the territory with Serbian documents, but will be equipped with an entry-exit document.

Reciprocity is also valid for vehicles registered in Serbia, which must be equipped with Kosovo license plates to cross the border.

In June, the Government of Kosovo set a two-month deadline for Serbian citizens to remove illegal license plates. In the north of Kosovo, there were some reactions against the decision, while there were also statements from the leaders of Serbia.
