A single ticket was declared the winner for a $1.3 billion Mega Millions lottery jackpot. It was sold in Illinois at a gas station in the suburbs of Chicago.
The holder of the winning ticket is still unidentified. He paid just $2 for it as he got all six numbers right.
He now has the right to withdraw $780.5 million in one go or agree to receive the full amount in one annual payment over 30 years.
A large part of the price goes to taxes. The last time this jackpot was awarded was in April, where the winner received $20 million.
The odds of a person winning the lottery by hitting all the numbers drawn are 1 in 302.5 million.
Officials said this is the largest jackpot ever won in the state of Illinois and the second largest in the game's 20-year history. The largest figure ever awarded by this lottery is $1.5 billion won in South Carolina in October 2018.
Half of the revenue from the sale of each ticket remains with the respective state which is spent on pensions, education or public employees. The ticket seller also receives a significant amount.
