Spying scandal in Britain, husband of Labour MP arrested

Three people have been arrested in Britain for spying for China.

One of the three people arrested on suspicion of spying for China is David Taylor, the husband of the incumbent Labour Party MP, Joanie Reid.

Reid said in a statement to Sky News that she had seen nothing to make her suspect that her husband had broken any laws.

She added that she is not part of his business activities and that neither she nor her children are part of the investigation, asking that the media respect her family's privacy.

The MP emphasized that she has never been to China, has never discussed issues related to China in the House of Commons, and has not met any Chinese diplomat or representative in official capacity.

"I am a social democrat who believes in freedom of expression, free unions and free elections. I am no fan of the Chinese Communist Party," Reid added.

Joan Reid, the granddaughter of internationally renowned trade unionist Jimmy Reid, was first elected to parliament during the 2024 general election, after an eight-year career as a councillor in the Lewisham ward.

Her husband, David Taylor, is listed on the MP's register of interests as a director of Earthcott Limited, a lobbying firm.
