White House: TikTok to be deleted from government devices within 30 days

The White House has given all federal agencies 30 days to delete TikTok from all government devices.

The Chinese-owned social media app, which has become hugely popular around the world, has come under scrutiny from Washington over security concerns.

The ban, ordered by Congress late last year, follows similar actions by Canada, the EU, Taiwan and more than half of US states.

In December, Congress voted to ban federal employees from using the app and gave the administration 60 days to issue directives.

Many government agencies, including the White House, the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security and the State Department had banned TikTok from government devices before the vote. On Tuesday, the House Foreign Affairs Committee will vote on a bill that could give Joe Biden the authority to ban TikTok from all US devices.

Earlier on Monday, Canada announced a ban on TikTok from government-issued devices, saying it poses an "unacceptable" level of risk to privacy and security. The EU's two biggest policy-making institutions last week banned TikTok from staff phones on cybersecurity grounds
