A Russian scientist known for developing cruise missiles has been found dead in a snowy forest area near Moscow.

Ukraine's intelligence service claimed to have killed Mikhail Shatsky, deputy director of a Moscow-based ballistic engineering unit.

"Anyone involved in the development of the Russian military-industrial complex and supporting Russian aggression in Ukraine in one way or another is a legitimate target," a Ukrainian defense source told the Kyiv Independent.

Russian authorities, propagandists and major news channels have not commented on the event.

Photos published by pro-Ukrainian channels on the Telegram social messaging system show a man wearing jeans and a black coat, lying in the snow and covered in blood.

It was not possible to identify whether the body belonged to Shatsky, although a close-up of the face showed that the deceased had a black mustache and a strong resemblance to him.

A second Ukrainian intelligence source confirmed to "Ukrainskaya Pravda" that Ukrainian intelligence agents had plotted and carried out the murder, saying: "Mikhail Shatsky was shot dead by an assassin in the Kuzminki forest park near Kotelniki, Moscow Region," the source said.

Important Stories, a Russian anti-war Telegram channel, said it had located the location where Shatsky's body was found in a remote forest area southeast of Moscow, approximately a 10-minute walk from the scientist's home.

Shatsky was a chief scientist at the Kremlin's Mars Design Bureau, which specializes in developing automatic onboard control and navigation systems for aircraft, spacecraft and missiles, according to local media. Since 2017, Mars has been under the control of Rosatom, the Kremlin's prestigious nuclear agency.

He was entrusted with working on the Kremlin's secret plans to incorporate AI technology into Russian drones, aircraft, and spacecraft. He also oversaw the modernization of the Kh-59 and Kh-69 missiles, which the Kremlin has fired at Ukrainian cities.

Shatsky's murder was first revealed by Alexander Nevzorov, an anti-Kremlin journalist with more than a million subscribers on Telegram. He accused the scientist of killing "thousands of innocent Ukrainians" and said: "It seems that none of those guilty of the genocide of Ukrainians will die a natural death."

Ukraine's intelligence services have been linked to several assassinations inside Russia since the Kremlin took over in February 2022.
