A former FBI informant, who was accused by Special Counsel David Weiss of lying about President Joe Biden and his son Hunter's alleged business dealings with a Ukrainian energy company, will plead guilty to one count of making a false statement in a federal investigation, court documents say.
The guilty plea will avoid a trial for Alexander Smirnov, who was arrested earlier this year.
Mr. Smirnov's allegations about Hunter Biden's role in the company "Burisma Holdings" had been at the epicenter of the attention of President-elect Donald Trump and his allies for years.
Mr. Smirnov was accused of making false statements to the FBI during two meetings from 2015-2016, in which he said business executives associated with the Burisma company told him they hired Hunter Biden "to protect us, through his father, from all kinds of problems."
He is also accused of falsely claiming that Burisma executives paid $5 million each to Joe Biden and Hunter Biden during the Biden presidency.
These allegations were among the allegations that helped build the case for the Republican-majority House of Representatives' unsuccessful efforts to impeach President Biden.
Under the terms of the plea agreement, Mr. Smirnov will also plead guilty to three counts of tax evasion in 2020-2022.
During this period, Mr. Smirnov did not report income in the amount of $2.1 million.
He could be sentenced to 4-6 years in prison, according to American legislation./ VOA
