After Syrian rebels seized control of the country, ousting the regime of dictator Bashar al-Assad, anything but peace seems to be on the horizon. Recently, calls for the partition of Syria have been coming from neighboring Israel, which has occupied a significant portion of Syrian territory since Assad's overthrow.

In the article in The Times of Israel, the author, Zev Farber, an academic and rabbi, argues that the only solution for peace in the region is to divide Syria into three states. One for the Druze (an Arab nation with a distinct religion that is a synthesis of Ismailism (a branch of Shiite Islam), Christianity, Gnosticism, Neoplatonism, Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, Manichaeism, Pythagoreanism, and other philosophies and beliefs), one for the Alevis, and one for Sunni Muslims.

According to what he notes, the reasons for the brutal behavior of the Assad regime towards the inhabitants of Syria are due to the "sensitive" position of the Alawites. As the article points out, after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after World War I, the French and British divided their "spheres of influence" to control the Levant, which they had taken from the Ottomans. The article continues: "Initially, the coastal area containing the Alawites was to be governed directly by France and the rest of Syria as an autonomous Arab country. Then, in 1922, the Alawite coastal region was formed as its own autonomous entity, the "State of Latakia", separated from Syria. The Druze in the Ha'ran region (which includes the Israeli Golan Heights, southern Syria and northern Jordan) were also independent at the time; Latakia's independent status was removed in 1936, when the French annexed Syria.

According to the author of the article, the Alawites then begged them not to do so, as they believed it was unsafe to be a minority in a Sunni country. He notes that Bashar Al-Assad's great-grandfather, Suleiman Ali Al-Assad, wrote a letter in which he said that the Alawites would prefer to remain autonomous under French protection rather than join a fully Sunni state of Syria. But he was ignored. That is why the Alawites "seized" positions of power and ensured that they remained safe by severely suppressing any opposition.

Three states

As the only solution to end the conflicts, the Israeli columnist argues that Syria should be "divided" into three parts: "The Alevis should reform as a Latakia state, with international protection against Sunni Syria, so that they can consolidate." My assessment is that, in 20 years, Latakia could be a new Singapore, he says.

The Druze also need to be freed from a dangerous reactionary regime, with Hawra as their own state. Their borders would be protected by Israel, which would strongly prefer a border with a Druze country than with a Sunni Syria, which could go in an extremist direction.

"The rest of Syria will consolidate as a Sunni country. My hope is that it will be peaceful and progressive, but that is not something the rest of the world can control," he says.

Despite the fact that this specific stance does not constitute any kind of official Israeli position, the fact that in recent days the Israeli Armed Forces have occupied a significant portion of the territories inhabited by the Druze, declaring them "dead zones", raises questions.

However, what is striking is the fact that this article does not mention the Kurds, who control a significant part of the country.
