The meeting of the governing coalition in Germany

The heads of the so-called "traffic light coalition" have gathered this Wednesday evening at the chancellery in Berlin.

As German media reports, the governing coalition has apparently collapsed, as Chancellor Olaf Scholz of the Social Democrats (SPD) has fired the Finance Minister of the Liberals (FDP), Christian Lindner.

The leaders of what is known in Germany as the "traffic light coalition", the SPD, the FDP and the Greens, gathered at the chancellery in Berlin this evening.

Lindner is said to have suggested to Scholz that new elections be held in early 2025.

Scholz is reportedly due to appear at a media conference shortly.
