German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron, after congratulating Donald Trump on his landslide victory in the US presidential elections, did not hide the concern that could come from a new geopolitical context in the old continent.

Scholz and Macron held a telephone conversation where they emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation between European states in this new political reality.

Scholz also emphasizes the danger posed to Europe's security by Russia, while in his response, Macron says that the European Union should focus on protecting its interests and values.

Scholz's reaction:

America has voted. Germany remains a reliable transatlantic partner. This also applies to the security threat posed by Russia in the Euro-Atlantic region according to all NATO allies.

The EU must now stand especially close - and act united. As Chancellor, I am working towards this goal, together with Emmanuel Macron. We are coordinating closely with EU heads of state and government - tomorrow in Budapest and in the following weeks.

Germany and the US share a partnership and friendship that has grown over decades. We believe we are better together. We can achieve much more working together than against each other.

Macron's reaction:

I just spoke with Chancellor Olaf Scholz. We will work for a more united, stronger, more sovereign Europe in this new context. Cooperating with the United States of America and protecting our interests and values.
