Donald Trump won the US presidential election, defeating his political rival, Kamala Harris .

NBC News has devoted an article to what comes after Donald Trump's victory. NBC News appears critical of Trump's return to the White House.

Analysis:

There will be inevitable and immediate efforts to downplay the well-established threat of a second Donald Trump presidency.

But this time we have to take Trump seriously. This includes preparing for the possibility that he initiates a massive purge of the federal workforce and the process of mass layoffs.

Stephen Miller, Elon Musk and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. are likely to begin trying to implement their various harmful and possibly unconstitutional ideas.

We can expect Trump to pardon the January 6 rioters and fire the prosecutors who tried to hold him accountable. Once immunized by the Supreme Court, he can direct the Justice Department to prosecute his political opponents. He has the opportunity to abandon Ukraine and begin the process of weakening our alliances. A newly elected Trump could impose massive new tariffs on the economy.

Neither the impeachment process nor the justice system blocked his return to power.

Whatever the final outcome, the American people (or enough of them) have returned this misfit to power. In the end, nothing mattered. Not sexual abuse, cheating, lies or crimes. Not the bigotry of his campaign; no insults, no threats.

The American people were warned of the danger. His formerly loyal vice president refused to endorse Trump; his superior general called him a "total fascist"; some of his closest aides and cabinet members described in detail his erratic character and his indifference to the Constitution.

Trump never fired a gun on a New York City street, but he helped incite a violent mob to attack the US Capitol. It didn't matter that a jury of his peers found him guilty of sexually abusing a woman; and it didn't matter that he had sought the termination of the rules found in the Constitution to restore him to power. And it didn't matter when he lied about immigrants eating cats and dogs; or called the United States a "trash bin for the world."

That's probably the hardest part, because the Americans saw all of this and again said, “Yes, this is what we want. That's who we are."

The fight will be long and even harder now that we have been stripped of so many of our illusions.
