Polish spy chief: Putin may annex parts of Sweden and Estonia

The risk of a direct military clash between Russia and NATO remains consistent since Moscow's forces launched their invasion of Ukraine. The West fears a surprise attack by Vladimir Putin, and the billions invested in new armaments for Germany and the eastern flank of the Alliance show this.

In recent weeks, the European members of NATO have warned citizens that we may be very close to a possible Russian attack.

Meanwhile, Polish spy chief Jarosław Stróżyk has raised the alarm that Putin may be preparing a small-scale operation in the Baltic Sea to test NATO's defense capabilities.

According to Stróżyk, from the attack of the Russian forces, it is likely that Russia will be able to annex parts of Estonia or Sweden.

Stróżyk said that all predictions about Russia's readiness for a possible attack on NATO are based on some assumptions coming from the agencies, without full information. But the intelligence official in Warsaw acknowledged that Putin is already capable of planning a small-scale invasion.

"Putin is already probably prepared for a mini-operation against one of the Baltic countries, for example, to enter the famous Narva [municipality in Estonia] or to land on one of the Swedish islands. What the West is doing to supporting Ukraine shows him that in the event of an attack on NATO, the Western response would be even greater," he told Gazeta Prawna.

This warning by Polish intelligence comes at a time when Warsaw has given the green light to host nuclear weapons on its borders if necessary.

Polish President Andrzej Duda said his country would get nuclear weapons if NATO asked, to respond to Putin's threats.

"Russia is increasingly militarizing Kaliningrad. It has recently moved its nuclear weapons to Belarus. If our allies decide to station nuclear weapons on our territory as part of nuclear separation, to bolster NATO's eastern flank, we are ready to accept them. I have spoken about it several times. I have to admit that when I was asked about it, I expressed our willingness."
