Republican Kevin McCarthy has been elected Speaker of the House of Representatives in the 15th round. Out of 428 votes cast, he managed to get 216 and Hakeem Jeffries of the Democrats managed to get only 212 votes.
Clerk of the House of Representatives Cheryl Johnson said: "Kevin McCarthy has received the majority of votes cast and is elected Speaker of the House of Representatives."
In his first speech as speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy told his colleagues: "Now the hard work begins."
"What we do here today, next week, next month, next year, will set the focus for everything that follows. As the Speaker of the House, my ultimate responsibility is not to my party, but to our country." McCarthy added
Republicans have vowed to launch investigations into Biden, his administration and his family's business. However, Democratic President Joe Biden congratulated the new Republican speaker.
"The American people expect their leaders to govern in a way that puts the needs of Americans above all else, and that's what we need to do now. As I said after the midterms, I'm prepared to work with Republicans when I can, and the voters made it clear they expect Republicans to be prepared to work with me. Now that the leadership of the House of Representatives is in place, it's time for that process to begin," Biden said.
The turnaround in developments that have kept the chamber paralyzed came as Mr. McCarthy agreed to many of the demands of his opponents within the Republican caucus. Among those concessions is the reinstatement of a long-standing House rule that would have allowed any single member to call a vote to remove the speaker from office. Essentially doing so would put Mr McCarthy under constant threat from his opponents.
Likewise, according to the agreement, legislators are expected to have more influence in the drafting and approval of legislation.
