A Federal Court in Mexico City decided to stop the extradition to the United States of Ovidio Guzmán, the son of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzmán, who is considered the current leader of the notorious drug cartel, a day after he was arrested in a sting operation police in northern Mexico that led to the death of 29 people.

The United States is seeking the extradition of Ovidio Guzmán for drug trafficking and had put up a $5 million reward for information leading to the capture of the most wanted criminal of the Sinaloa cartel.

Earlier, the Foreign Minister of Mexico, Marcelo Ebrard, confirmed that there is an arrest warrant in the US for the son of "El Chapo", but added that his possible extradition cannot be done immediately due to some legal procedures.

On Friday, the judge also suspended a measure preventing Guzman from communicating with relatives and his legal team.

Ovidio, nicknamed "El Ratón" or "The Rat", is currently being held in a maximum-security federal prison in Mexico City, from where his father also escaped earlier.
