At least 29 people have been killed in the Mexican state of Sinaloa, as a result of the fighting that broke out after the arrest of Ovidio Guzman, the son of drug trafficker "El Chapo". The news was confirmed by the local authorities, according to which the victims are 19 members of criminal gangs and 10 members of the armed forces.

Meanwhile, the first images have been published after the arrest of the most wanted of the "Sinaloa" cartel, 32-year-old Ovidio Guzman, the son of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, the latter extradited to the United States of America in 2017.

People were urged to stay indoors amid the outbreak of violence, as gunmen torched vehicles and looted shops and homes.

Reports also claim that armed groups attacked hospitals and health centers, "kidnapping" doctors and nurses and forcing them to treat cartel fighters wounded in clashes with security forces.

Two ambulances were reportedly stolen with paramedics inside and doctors were taken hostage from several hospitals in the Sinaloa city of Navolato.

Extradition

The United States had offered a $5 million reward for information leading to Ovidio's arrest or conviction. It is not clear whether Ovidio will be extradited to the United States like his father, who is serving a life sentence at Colorado's Supermax, the US's highest-security federal prison.

Ovidio has also been accused by the US State Department – along with his brother Joaquin – of overseeing 11 laboratories that produced up to 2,200 kg of the drug per month.

Authorities believe he is also behind the murders of informants, a rival drug dealer and a Mexican folk singer who refused to sing at his wedding.
