The US Treasury Department announced on Friday that it has removed four allies of the former president of the Bosnian Serb entity, Milorad Dodik, from its sanctions list.

This decision was welcomed by Dodik himself, who is campaigning to lift US sanctions against him.

Dodik has been sanctioned by the US and Britain for obstructing the implementation of the Dayton peace agreement, which ended the Bosnian war in the 1990s, as well as by several European countries that say his separatist policies endanger peace and stability in Bosnia.

Dodik was stripped of his mandate as president of the Bosnian Serb entity by the Bosnian Central Election Commission, after the Bosnian Court of Appeals upheld his February sentence of one year in prison and a six-year ban from holding office.

He was convicted of failing to comply with the decisions of the international community’s high representative in Bosnia, determined to prevent the country from descending into ethnic violence.
Jelena Pajic Bastinac, Danijel Dragicevic, Goran Rakovic and Dijana Milankovic were sanctioned in January for helping to organize illegal celebrations of “Republika Srpska Day,” which Bosnian Serbs marked on January 9.

They challenged the decision of Bosnia's highest court, which banned the holiday as unconstitutional, as well as warnings from Western peace monitors.

The US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) did not provide explanations as to why these four individuals were removed from the sanctions list.

Dodik, who has hired several lobbyists in the US to help lift sanctions against him, said the sanctions were politically motivated./REL
