Pit discovered in Chile

Chilean authorities on Monday began investigating a mysterious sinkhole about 25 meters (82 feet) in diameter that appeared over the weekend in a mining area in the north of the country, foreign media reported .

Chilean media showed aerial images of the underground pit operated by Canadian copper miner Lundin Mining LUN.TO, about 665 kilometers (413 miles) north of the capital Santiago.

The National Geology and Mining Service (Sernageomin) became aware of the sinkhole on Saturday, July 30, and has dispatched specialized personnel to the area, agency director David Montenegro said in a statement.

The statement added that there is a distance of about 200 meters to the end and that no material was discovered there.

The mayor of Tierra Amarilla municipality, Cristobal Zuniga, told local media that a sinkhole is the result of unconscious and unmeasured mining activities being carried out in the area.

"This is the biggest sinkhole we've seen in a while. We're very concerned because it's active and continues to grow. Our community has never seen this," Zuniga said.

Sernageomin reported the closure of areas from the entrance to the Alcaparrosa mine site, located near the pit.

Lundin Mining did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Lundin Mining owns 80% of the property and the rest is held by Japan's Sumitomo Corporation.
