China has reacted strongly after the arrival of the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States of America, Nancy Pelosi, this Tuesday in Taiwan.
Through a statement, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that Pelosi's visit violates China's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
"This is a serious violation of the China principle and the provisions of the three China-US joint communiques. It has a serious impact on the political foundation of China-US relations and seriously undermines China's sovereignty and territorial integrity," the statement said.
Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, which is not supported by the White House, is the first by a senior US official in decades.
China has repeatedly warned against the visit and said on Tuesday that the US would "pay the price".
The spokeswoman of the Foreign Ministry, Hua Chunying, emphasized that China had been in communication with the US about the sensitivity of the visit.
"The American side will bear the responsibility and pay the price for undermining China's sovereign security interests," she said.
Today, China sent fighter jets to the informal dividing line between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan.
