Authorities in Ecuador have seized 8.8 tons of cocaine.
The amount was hidden among bananas in a container at the port of Guayaquil bound for Belgium, according to a statement from the police chief.
"We have prevented the international sale of 90 million doses worth $330 million to Europe," General Fausto Salinas wrote on Twitter, posting video showing police officers searching the container.
Between Colombia and Peru, the two countries where the largest quantities of cocaine are produced in the world, Ecuador has been transformed in recent years from part of the transit routes into a major center for trafficking the white powder to the European and American markets.
The authorities proceeded with a record amount of confiscation in 2021 which reached 210 tonnes.
In 2022, seizures reached 200 tonnes for the second consecutive year – 61% of which were hidden in containers of bananas for export. In 2023, 31 tons have already been seized.
