The Alternative Party in North Macedonia is seeking an association of Albanian municipalities, just as the Serbs are seeking in Kosovo.
"At the time when Kosovo is before the final agreement for the normalization of relations with Serbia, and when every Western diplomat who goes to Pristina repeats the refrain 'to become the Association of municipalities with a Serbian majority in Kosovo', the question that must be asked is why the parties Albanians in North Macedonia, those that have municipalities (Democratic Union for Integration, Alliance for Albanians and BESA), do not raise an initiative for the establishment of the Association of Albanian municipalities in North Macedonia with those powers that the international community wants to there is the Association of municipalities with a Serbian majority in Kosovo", stated Zeqirja Ibrahimi from the "Alternativa" party.
This party was part of the Government with three ministers, but went into opposition due to disagreements regarding the allocation of posts, after the decision that the party, Alliance for Albanians, joins the government. Its request for the Association of Albanian Municipalities was rejected by other parties, except the Besa Movement, which has said that it will consider such a proposal. The Democratic Union for Integration, led by Ali Ahmeti, said that such a proposal is "anti-Western" and harmful to the processes that Kosovo is going through.
"Such a proposal is pathetic, anti-American and anti-European, it is harmful for the final solution of the Kosovo issue. Unsuccessful attempt to survive in the political scene after the fiasco and the completely wrong and destructive alignment" , says the DUI's reaction.
View from the meeting of the Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, with the heads of the Albanian political parties from North Macedonia, on January 10, 2023. The Social-Democratic League says that the municipalities in North Macedonia have the right to cooperation, therefore they do not need associations, or other forms of union.
"The situation in Kosovo cannot be reflected in our country, in any way. According to the Law on Local Self-Government and the Law on Intermunicipal Cooperation, cooperation between municipalities in North Macedonia is absolutely possible. Each municipality can cooperate in any form, when it finds interest in a certain topic. We consider this request to be frivolous, not to be used to gain political points and it is unacceptable" , stated Sanela Shkrijel from the Social-Democratic League of Prime Minister, Dimitar Kovacevski.
The chairman of VMRO DPMNE, Hristijan Mickovski, said that such an idea "could worsen inter-ethnic relations" and that the relations and rights of ethnic communities, especially the Albanian one, are regulated by the Ohrid Agreement. Albanians demand the removal of the definition in the Constitution as a "20%" people. Some smaller Macedonian parties have called the proposal of Alternative "a nationalist idea that damages the European perspective of North Macedonia". Kosovo and Serbia have reached agreement on the Association in 2013 and then in 2015 on the principles for its establishment. In 2015, the Constitutional Court of Kosovo found that the agreement is not in full harmony with the Constitution.
Serbia demands that Kosovo implement the agreements reached, but the Government of Kosovo has declared against a mono-ethnic association./REL
