Tragedy in Italy, immigrants: Traffickers were scared, threw about 20 people

New details have come to light from the tragedy in Italy, where at least 59 people lost their lives on a migrant boat off the Italian coast in Cutro, a town 20 kilometers from Crotone.

According to the testimonies of the survivors, the smugglers threw about 20 people into the sea when they saw lights and got scared because it seemed that the police were waiting for them. The fishing boat on which 150-180 migrants were going to Italy was split in two by the waves.

"It was dark. Suddenly the smugglers, four in all, while we were 500 meters from the shore, saw lights, rays illuminating the darkness above. They were scared, they thought the police were waiting for them. So they changed routes to land somewhere else. But we had to move fast, pick up speed. The only way was to lighten the weight on board. So they threw the people overboard in the waves. They threw at least 20 people," the witnesses said.

Among the survivors, according to investigative sources, a person suspected of being one of the traffickers was also arrested. Investigators, but at the moment, no action has been taken against him. The boat left 4 days ago from Izmir, Turkey.

The boat had left four days ago from the port of Izmir from Turkey (on which migrants coming from Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan were traveling). He was spotted yesterday evening about 40 miles off the coast of Crotone by a European agency Frontex aircraft on patrol. When the alarm was raised, a reconnaissance from Crotone's naval operational section and a patrol ship from Taranto's naval air group had departed. However, rough seas prevented them from reaching the area and the vehicles were forced to return to their moorings. After that, the land search apparatus was started and the alarm was also conveyed to the police forces.

Just before five in the morning, a fisherman passing through the area noticed the now destroyed boat and several bodies 'floating' in the water. All that remained of the boat was a large amount of wooden pieces scattered in the sea. In one area of the beach, the first volunteers rescued survivors a short distance from a long line of white bags. Throughout the morning, a Coast Guard helicopter flew over the area, while the coast was patrolled by a Port Authority patrol which had difficulty operating due to high waves.
