Russia has said Ukraine has carried out another drone attack overnight, targeting Moscow for the second time in a row. According to the Russian aviation agency, Rosaviatsia, all four of the capital’s main airports were temporarily closed for security reasons, but have since reopened. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Russian forces had neutralized 19 Ukrainian drones launched from several directions and that debris from the drones had fallen on one of the city’s main highways, without causing any casualties.
Ukraine has not commented on the incident, but Ukrainian authorities reported similar attacks by Russia in Kharkiv and the Kiev region overnight. In Odessa, one person was killed by a Russian drone strike.
This is the second time in two days that Russia has reported such attacks, with just the day before the Russian Defense Ministry announced that it had shot down 26 Ukrainian drones. Drone attacks have also been reported in the Russian cities of Penza and Voronezh.
Since the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine more than three years ago, Kiev has carried out several drone strikes on Moscow, including a major attack in March that killed three people. Meanwhile, Ukraine reported hitting a drone command post in Russia's Kursk region near the village of Tyotkino. Russia had previously said it had retaken the entire region in April, but Ukraine maintains its forces continue to operate in territory across the border.
In Kursk, a Ukrainian attack hit an electrical substation in the town of Rylsk, damaging two transformers and disrupting power supplies. Meanwhile, authorities in Sumy, just 12 km from Tyotkino, have ordered the evacuation of residents in two areas due to the risk of attacks. Ukraine entered Kursk in August 2024 to create a buffer zone for Sumy and to provide leverage in potential future talks.
