According to the German Secret Service BND and the two Dutch secret service agencies MIVD and AIVD, Russia is increasing its use of chemical weapons in Ukraine.

The German government itself confirmed the reports of the use of chloropicrin, a chemical warfare agent that damages the lungs.

Experts claim that in high concentrations and in closed environments, chloropicrin, which was also used during World War I, can have deadly consequences.

German government spokesman Stefan Kornelius said that Russia's use of tear gas and other chemical weapons in the war in Ukraine constitutes a serious violation of the agreement banning the use of chemical weapons.

This situation has not left the Netherlands indifferent either, with Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans informing Parliament in The Hague of the fact that the use of such weapons by Moscow's forces is now taking place on a large scale and systematically.

"This is a dangerous, completely unacceptable development and shows once again the brutality of the aggressor that Ukraine is facing," he said.

Russia's use of chemical weapons in conflicts is also a risk for "the rest of Europe and the world," Brekelmans said.

The Ukrainian Defense Minister stated that Russia has so far used chemical weapons over 9,000 times against Ukrainian troops. According to Kiev, at least three deaths can be directly attributed to the effects of chemical weapons.
