Russia advances on Kiev, killing hundreds of civilians and military personnel

Russia expanded its offensive against Ukraine on the outskirts of the capital Kiev on February 25, after attacking the country by land, sea and air the day before.

The Russian military carried out airstrikes on cities and military bases and sent troops and tanks, killing 137 civilians and military personnel, according to figures released by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

He called them "heroes" in a video released in the early hours of February 25, in which he also says more than 300 people were injured in less than 24 hours of fighting.

Zelenskiy said Russia resumed rocket attacks at 4 a.m. on February 25, but its troops were stopped from advancing in most directions.

The blasts were heard from Kiev early on February 25 as air sirens sounded.

"They are killing people and turning peaceful cities into military targets. "It's bad and will never be forgiven," Zelenskiy said. Zelenskiy said that despite the losses, Ukraine's armed forces were "excellently defending the country against one of the most powerful nations in the world."

Russia began its invasion of Ukraine before dawn on February 24, launching airstrikes on cities and military bases and sending troops and tanks from many directions.

In Washington, US President Joe Biden announced new sanctions against Russia, saying Putin "chose this war" and that his country would bear the consequences of his actions.

Zelenskiy urged the United States and the West to impose even tougher sanctions and remove the Russians from the SWIFT system, a key financial network that connects thousands of banks around the world. Biden said the US and its partners are avoiding the move at the moment, but may impose more sanctions later.
