According to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the US government wants to remain a member of NATO, but is seeking reforms. Speaking before the House Foreign Affairs Committee in Washington, Rubio stated that President Trump will attend the NATO summit next month in Turkey.

There, he will present the US demand for change and again call for allies to increase their defense spending.

However, the military alliance needs to be reformed. The summit will be held on July 7 and 8 in Ankara.

"We are still members of NATO, but NATO needs profound changes, and the President has made that clear," Rubio said.

Trump is particularly irritated by the fact that some NATO countries, notably Spain, refuse to allow the US to use air bases for the war against Iran.

The US Secretary of State was also asked about Trump's request regarding control of Greenland. Greenland is "for the time being" part of Denmark, Rubio said.

Discussions about using this territory for collective defense purposes are ongoing. The minister did not provide any details. “I think we will have some very good news.”
