After the earthquake in Turkey, the luxury residential complex where Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu lived, whose death was announced on Saturday, was completely destroyed.

The 12-story building in which Atsu lived was called Rönezans Rezidans and was one of the most luxurious in Antiakya. The 249-apartment building reportedly collapsed like a house of cards when the earthquake struck in the early hours of February 6.

Last week, builder Mehmet Yasar Koskun, who built the residence in 2013, was arrested at Istanbul airport. He denied that he was trying to escape, claiming that he was traveling to Montenegro where he had other projects in development.

Turkish media reports that in his testimony he allegedly did not know why the building did not withstand the earthquake in Turkey.

The Rönezans Rezidans apartment complex where Atsu lived had a swimming pool, gym and other luxury facilities, while being advertised as "a piece of paradise with the highest construction standards".

An estimated 1,000 people lived in the compound, with hundreds of them believed to have died in the rubble.

Tragically ironic that many of those who had chosen to live in this particular housing complex did so because they believed that the modern construction method made it more earthquake resistant. Significantly, the Turkish financial newspaper Dünya reported that the building complex was built on "moving foundations" to better withstand earthquakes.

However, it is reported that some of its tenants had expressed their concern about the condition of the 10-year-old facility. Also, it is emphasized that other buildings built in the past withstood the earthquake and did not collapse, although they suffered severe damage.
