The United States Intelligence Agency has released its annual report, raising concerns that the Western Balkans may face ethnic conflicts during 2024. The report predicts that during 2024, the region may be prone to localized inter-ethnic violence. As the document points out, nationalist leaders in the region can exacerbate tensions to gain political advantage, and to manipulate the influence of external actors.
According to published data, this manipulation will aim to reinforce and exploit ethnic differences for various reasons, including increasing regional influence or hindering the further integration of the Balkans into the European Union and Euro-Atlantic structures.
The report refers to recent events in the region, such as the aggression of Banjska where the policeman Afrim Bunjaku was killed, and the tensions of May 2023, where clashes between KFOR and Serbian protesters in the north of Kosovo left dozens of peacekeeping soldiers injured.
"Clashes between Serbian nationalists and Kosovar authorities have caused loss of life and injuries, including injuries to NATO peacekeepers in 2023," the report added. The report also expresses concern over the destructive actions of the Serbian leader in Bosnia and Herzegovina, who has been accused of taking provocative steps aimed at neutralizing international oversight in Bosnia and ensuring the de facto separation of Republika Srpska. These actions could prompt the leaders of the Bosnian (Muslim) population to strengthen their defense capacities, risking the outbreak of violent conflicts that could challenge the presence and efforts of peacekeeping forces.
