Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived today in North Korea where he is expected to meet with dictator Kim Jong Un.

The streets of Pyongyang were decorated with Russian flags and posters of Putin ahead of his arrival in the early hours of Wednesday morning local time.

It is his first visit since 2000. This week's visit is a rare overseas trip for Putin since he launched his invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and a key moment for Kim Jong Un, who has not expected another world leader in his own politically isolated country since the coronavirus pandemic.

Putin's visit will be closely watched around the world and is expected to further cement the growing partnership between the two powers that is based on their shared hostility to the West and fueled by Moscow's need for ammunition for the war in Ukraine.

After his visit to North Korea, Putin is scheduled to travel to Hanoi where he will meet with Vietnamese communist leaders.

Putin's trip to North Korea will have a "very eventful" agenda, his aide Yuri Ushakov said during a press conference on Monday. The two leaders plan to sign a new strategic partnership, Ushakov said.
