Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu said his country was facing "a very dangerous moment", warning that tensions were being sought in the Transnistria region.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Nicu Popescu said that the country's institutions have been put on high alert.

Fears that Moldova could be involved in the Ukraine war are growing.

The Russian-speaking region of Transnistria, located east of Moldova, has been controlled by Russian rebels since the 1992 war, when Moscow intervened militarily.

Last week a Russian military official said taking control of southern Ukraine would help Russia have a Transnistrian corridor that shares a 453km border with Ukraine.

Then on Monday there were several grenade attacks in this region of Moldova.

The Deputy Prime Minister says that there is tension between the various forces that control the region that are interested in destabilization.

Popescu said that most Moldovan citizens, including those in Transnistria, want to stay out of the war, writes 'The Guardian'.

The Moldovan government, which has no control over the region, says it suspects the attack could be a provocation to provoke tension.

Transnistria is 'de facto' an independent state but is still internationally recognized as part of Moldova.

In November 1990, an armed conflict broke out in Dubasari between pro-Transnistrian forces backed by the Russian army and pro-Moldovan forces.

In July 1992, a ceasefire was declared for what is otherwise called the Moldovan-Russian war.

Moldova has been part of the Soviet Union since 1940 and until its declaration of independence in 1991.

Prior to the Soviet occupation, Moldovan territory was part of Romania.
