The "Tehran Checkpoint" in the Strait of Hormuz: How Iran Decides Who

Iran has imposed strict control over the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, turning it into a kind of "blockade" where it is decided which naval vessels are allowed to pass.

According to reports, ships entering the strait are contacted by Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commanders via VHF radio, who request an authorization code. If the ship presents this code and is deemed acceptable, it is allowed to proceed.

This process is part of a broader system of controls, where naval vessels must present complete documentation and receive prior approval from Iranian authorities. In some cases, ships must also be escorted by Iranian forces while passing through a controlled corridor.

Passage through the area has become increasingly selective. Iran has said it only allows ships it considers "non-hostile" and not linked to its adversaries to pass through, while others face detention or security risks.
