Poland, farmers block the border crossing with Ukraine

Polish farmers blocked the border crossing with Ukraine in the Medyka area in protest against the agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur trade bloc, which they say will harm their competitiveness, the Polish news agency PAP reported.

Farmers are also protesting after the government failed to meet their demand that during 2024 Poland keep the agricultural tax at the level of 2023.

The Minister of Agriculture of Poland said that he supports the demands of farmers regarding the "Mercosur" agreement and that the government will address this issue in the next meeting. "Mercosur" is a trade bloc of South American countries.

The Minister of Agriculture, Czeslaw Siekierski, said on the X network that: "The farmers' protest in Medyka has the same objective for which I have been fighting on different fronts for a long time. Let me remind you that in the Ministry of Agriculture we said NO to the agreement with Mercosur countries".

The PAP news agency reports that during the blockade on Saturday, which is expected to last 24 hours, around 30 individuals were seen walking along the border crossing. Only one Ukrainian truck per hour was allowed to leave Polish territory.

"At the moment there are no difficulties", Anita Pukalska from the Przemysl municipality police region is quoted as saying, regarding the farmers' blockade, which does not prevent the movement of vehicles with passengers, humanitarian and military transport./ VOA
