US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday denounced Germany's designation of the far-right AfD party as an extremist group.

“Germany just gave its spy agency new powers to surveil the opposition,” Rubio said in a post on X. “This is not democracy – it’s tyranny in disguise.”

The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution has classified the German party Alternative for Germany (AfD) as an "extreme right" entity.

For the Internal Services, there are "security" elements in the extremist profile of the party, which came second in the federal elections in February.

Some factions of the AfD, such as its youth wing, had already been classified as extremist, while the party as a whole was classified as "suspicious" in 2021.
