Hunting in Venice / Donald Trump's son revolts Italians, is sued by the politician for killing a rare and legally protected duck

Donald Trump Jr. has been accused of illegally killing a rare species of duck during a hunting trip in Italy.

The eldest son of Donald Trump, the US president, is said to have shot a red-breasted duck, which is protected by Italian and EU laws.

Under Italy's national hunting law, which was passed in 1992, anyone found guilty of killing a protected species faces a fine of 1,500 euros.

Italian MPs have called for Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, the Environment Minister, to investigate the incident, while a regional politician has filed a criminal complaint.

Trump Jr. was on a hunting trip to the lagoons south of Venice while on vacation in December.

The video was published by The Global Hunt for Adventure, a hunting website.

Standing in a shooting position near a foggy lagoon and wearing a camouflage jacket, he says in the video that he and his fellow hunters shot the rare bird.

Pointing to a killed duck, he says: "So this is a pretty unusual duck for that area... I don't even know what it is in English. But it was an incredible shot."

Andrea Zanoni, a regional politician in Veneto and a member of the Europa Verde (Green Europe) party, said on Tuesday that he had filed a criminal complaint with Italy's Carabinieri police.

“At one point, Trump is shown describing the ducks that were shot, including a ruddy duck, which is very rare in Europe,” Zanoni said. The species grows in Asia but is found in some isolated pockets of Europe and North Africa.

Zanoni said the hunt appears to have taken place in the Valle Pirimpiè, part of the lagoons and marshes that extend south from Venice.

He said it was "an area protected by European regulations and is part of an area of ??the EU's Natura 2000 Network, as a special conservation area." Zanoni said that under Italian law, only Italian citizens or residents were allowed to hunt.

But Pichetto Fratin, the Environment Minister in Giorgia Meloni's government, said he was awaiting an official report on the matter.

"I read the news, but I don't know anything about it, neither when it happened nor how it happened. I'm waiting for a report so that I have all the information available," he said, adding that he was "proud" that Trump Jr had chosen Italy for hunting.
