Greece sends singer Ponde to Eurovision, Turkey protests: We are seeing if her song has political messages

Greece has chosen to send the singer Klavdia, who is of Pondi origin, to Eurovision. Her song Asteromata, a ballad with mournful lyrics, is suspected to refer to the persecution of the Pondi by the Turks.

The Ponds are a community originally from Asia Minor who, after being persecuted by the Young Turks, settled in Greece. They today "self-identify" as Greeks.

But Eurovision Türkiye did not take this well, stating that political messages are prohibited in Eurovision.

Eurovision Turkey announcement:

“On January 30, Greece chose its representative for Eurovision 2025 and her song. Klavdia will represent Greece with the song “Asteromata”. There have been reports in the Greek press and on social media that the song is allegedly inspired by the Pontic genocide and refugees.

Further, before the national final, Klavdia made this statement in a show on state television ERT: "My family is of Pontic origin, they are refugees and that is why I have a connection with the song. My grandmother used to tell me her stories, she used to talk to me about her family, how they were deported and went to the Soviet Union at that time. My family was born there, grew up there until a certain age and returned to Greece in 1991 and started a new life here."

"With all this, we contacted TRT and they informed us that the song will be analyzed by them and Turkey's concern will be conveyed to the highest level according to the allegations. We will await further developments and will inform you."
