El Salvador offers to shelter violent criminals from the US
An unusual deal has been offered to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio by El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele, for the latter's country to shelter violent American criminals and deportees from America of any nationality.
El Salvador has volunteered for this agreement, which international experts consider unprecedented and fraught with legal problems.
Secretary Rubio himself has considered it an unprecedented agreement.
"An extraordinary act of friendship with our country. El Salvador has agreed to the most unprecedented and extraordinary migration agreement anywhere in the world. Furthermore, President Bukele has offered to house in his country's prisons dangerous American criminals who are in our country, including those with American citizenship and legal residents," Marco Rubio told reporters.
The agreement was reached after Secretary Marco Rubio's tour of several Central American countries, which is aimed at consolidating regional support for President Trump's policy on illegal immigration.
It is not yet clear whether the US will accept this agreement offered by El Salvador.
Legal experts say the US cannot deport American citizens, whether they are convicted or not.
