Trump's warnings about tariffs, Macron: EU will stand up if its interests are affected

The EU will stand up if its interests are targeted, Emmanuel Macron has said, as the bloc's leaders called for talks, in response to Donald Trump's weekend threat to impose punitive tariffs.

"If our commercial interests are attacked, Europe, as a real power, will have to respect itself and therefore react," the French president said as he arrived for an informal defense meeting with other leaders in Brussels on Monday.

"The elections and recent statements by the new US president's administration were pushing the EU to be more united and active in responding to collective security issues," he said.

The US president repeated long-standing complaints about the size of the US trade deficit with the bloc and demanded that Europe import more American cars and agricultural products. "That's definitely going to happen with the EU," he said.

Trump added that while there was no specific timeline for the European tariffs, it is something that will happen very soon.
