Russia's warning: There will be World War III if Ukraine joins NATO

"If Ukraine is accepted into the US-led NATO military alliance, then the conflict in Ukraine would be guaranteed to escalate into World War III," a Russian Security Council official was quoted as saying.

After Russian President Vladimir Putin officially announced the annexation of up to 18% of Ukraine on September 30, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy unexpectedly submitted a request for fast-track NATO membership.

"Kiev is aware that such a step would mean a guaranteed escalation in the Third World War," Alexander Venediktov, deputy secretary of Russia's Security Council, told TASS, Reuters reports.

Venediktov, who is deputy to Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev, a powerful Putin ally, said he thought Ukraine's application was propaganda because the West understood the consequences of Ukraine's NATO membership.

President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly criticized the United States for pushing NATO's eastward expansion.
