The Government of Kosovo has decided to criminalize the performance of the virginity test in the country. According to the new code that the government voted today, performing a virginity test will be considered a criminal offense, as it is considered a violation of human rights.

The Government of Kosovo has approved today the change in the Criminal Code, through which harsher punishments are provided for those convicted of domestic violence, sexual assault and rape. An important part of this code, in addition to punitive measures for violators, is also the calculation of the virginity test as a criminal offense.

The Ministry of Justice, through which the changes in this code have passed, considers that the search for this test will be sanctioned since its search violates fundamental rights.

"Virginity testing is also foreseen as a new criminal offense, this new offense is sanctioned because it is considered that this is an unnecessary medical test through which basic human rights are violated", it is stated in the punitive measures published by the advisor of the Minister Albulena Haxhiu , Flag Pireva.

"Therefore, we intend to ensure the growth and compatibility of Kosovo's legal framework with international standards for human rights, which prohibit forced virginity checks, and have made the necessary changes in this aspect", it is further stated in the punitive measures.

In addition, with the new code, those convicted of sexual assault and domestic violence will face severe measures according to the amendments to the Criminal Code. They are expected to be banned from running for public positions for a period of 3-10 years at all levels. They will also be prohibited from obtaining a driver's license.
