From the office of British Prime Minister to that of NATO chief: Keir

Outgoing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer may be one of the candidates for the post of NATO Secretary General after the end of his term, The Observer reports, citing anonymous sources.

According to the report, Starmer is interested in the post that is expected to become vacant in 2028. However, to secure the appointment, he will need the support of the British Government and other Alliance member countries.

Sources emphasize that European leaders highly value Starmer's role in security issues, while his relations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are described as very close.

So far there is no official confirmation that Starmer intends to run for the leadership of NATO.

The news comes just days after Starmer announced his resignation as prime minister. Nominations for his successor to lead the Labour Party and the British government will be accepted from July 9 to 16.

The post of NATO Secretary General is considered one of the most important positions in the Euro-Atlantic security architecture, with direct influence on the Alliance's policies towards support for Ukraine and confrontation with Russia.
