Billionaire and Democratic Party influencer George Soros and his son Alex have spent a staggering $102.8 million in the midterm election cycle – making the family the main architects of the party’s seismic shift to the radical left.
With more than four months left until the November election, George Soros could break his $128 million spending record set during the midterm elections four years ago, when he was the single largest donor.
"Money talks, and Soros' money says the most insidious, unconstitutional, and costly tax increases in American history are on the table," said Douglas Kellogg, director of state projects at Americans for Tax Reform.
Soros is like a "James Bond movie thug", responsible for radically taking control of the Democratic Party, he added.
Only a small portion of this cycle's contributions – $793,800 – were made in the name of the 95-year-old megadonor, a review of publicly available data from the Federal Election Commission reveals.
Almost all of the money – $102 million – was channeled through the Democracy Political Action Committee (Democracy PAC), which is a super PAC that Soros created in 2020 and which serves as the family's main political arm, obscuring efforts to find out which radical candidates the clan is supporting.
Of this figure, just over half, $52 million, came from George Soros through the private corporation Geosor under his name, and the other half, $50 million, from the Fund for Policy Reform, a nonprofit organization that lists Alex Soros as a director on its tax returns.
And that's without counting the family's flagship organization, the Open Society Foundation – which funds efforts to decriminalize drugs, open the border, and dismantle the police – as well as its lobbying arm, the Open Society Action Fund, which is even more opaque because it is not required to disclose political spending, as it is registered as a nonprofit that claims to do purely advocacy work.
In past election cycles, Open Society Action Fund money flowed to groups supporting left-wing stars like “Squad” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her embattled friend Rep. Ilhan Omar, but his 2025 tax returns are not yet available.
"They would rather remodel America into something entirely different."
The Family Grants Network has denied that it is a terrorist organization, insisting that its mission is to strengthen democracy.
Like his successor, patriarch Soros also made a maximum contribution to Platner, and both father and son gave $7,000 each to Representative Pramila Jayapal, who last month admitted to smuggling oil into Cuba despite the US blockade.
"There are two guarantees in life, death and George Soros giving Democrats a blank check," Republican National Committee spokeswoman Delanie Bomar chided.
"They don't have the money or the resources that Republicans have, so they're turning to anti-Semitic dark money from a billionaire."
George Soros' contributions make him the single largest individual donor in the 2026 midterm election cycle, a Washington Post analysis that examined 49 other donors found.
Soros, born in Budapest to a Jewish family, moved to the United Kingdom after surviving the Nazi occupation of Hungary and set up his first fund, becoming known as "the man who broke the Bank of England" after winning $1 billion by betting against the pound during "Black Wednesday" in 1992.
His home country, Hungary, passed “Stop Soros” laws in 2018, forcing the tycoon to relocate the Open Society Foundation’s European operations elsewhere.
His son Alex, a graduate of New York University, was a longtime bachelor before marrying former Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin in a glamorous Hamptons wedding last summer, where notable guests included Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, the Obamas and the Clintons.
A spokesman for the Soros family declined to comment.
