Thailand will punish those accused of sexual abuse with chemical castration. Foreign media write that this will be applied in order to reduce the repetition of the accused to sexually abuse again.

Criminals deemed likely to commit more sexual assaults after their release from prison will be given the option of the injection, in exchange for a reduced sentence. The procedure will require the approval of two doctors and offenders will be monitored for 10 years and forced to wear electronic bracelets.

The bill, which the lower house passed in March, was approved yesterday by 145 senators, with two abstentions, but still requires another vote, then royal assent.

Of the 16,413 convicted sex offenders released from Thai prisons between 2013 and 2020, 4,848 have reoffended, according to corrections department figures.
