With the country at war, a petition calling for the legalization of same-sex marriage has begun in Ukraine and has received enough signatures for the president to consider the proposal. The petition has more than 27,900 signatures, meaning President Volodymyr Zelensky now has 10 days to respond.
Homosexuality is not illegal in Ukraine, but same-sex marriages and civil partnerships are not recognized. This has caused particular problems for LGBT people who enlist in the army after the invasion of Russia.
For example, under Ukrainian law, if someone in a same-sex relationship dies, their partner cannot take their body or bury it. Launched in early June, it now has more than 28,000 signatures.
An LGBT organization has described the petition as an "important moment" for members of the community.
"It is important that LGBTQ people have the right to see their partner and take their body from the morgue and seek compensation if necessary ," Oksana Solonska, media relations manager at Kyiv Pride, told the BBC.
It is not clear whether Zelensky will choose to legalize same-sex marriage.
