Smoke from wildfires in Canada, which have been raging for weeks, has crossed the Atlantic Ocean and is beginning to darken the skies of southwestern Europe.

Forecasters in Portugal are calling for skies darkened by smoke particles on Tuesday, while raging fires in Canada are beginning to touch Europe.

A plume of smoke and soot stretches thousands of kilometers from the province of Quebec, Canada, where the fires are located, across the Atlantic Ocean, according to NASA satellite images released Monday.

Smoke began to reach the Azores islands on Sunday and reached Western Europe on Monday, according to the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere. The smoke is also affecting Spain, France and other countries.

But smoke does not pose the same health risks in Europe.

Unlike the smog that sparked air quality alerts in the US in early June, the particles that have arrived in Europe appear to be higher in the air, at 1,100 meters and above, according to the climate agency.
