He fought all his life to protect "his land" a few steps from the sea in the southwest of Sardinia. Ovidio Marras, the shepherd who inspired coastal protection in Italy, has died at the age of 93. He managed to win what was called the "battle against concrete" in the Capo Malfatano area. One of the places considered "the most beautiful in Sardinia" where some of the biggest Italian entrepreneurs represented by the Sitas group wanted to build a luxury resort by the sea.
Land cannot be sold
It was in this piece of land that the story of Ovidio Marras began, who in the village between Tuerredda and Capo Malfatano had grown up tending sheep on his family's land. Then the project for the construction of the resort a few hundred meters from the sea and the offers for the sale of the land. Requests and proposals to which Marras had always said no, rejecting crazy numbers. "Look, I'm not selling it - he answered -, this is my father's land and my father's father's land. I will keep it and you have no right to build around here".

The first appeal to the court
Marras clashed endlessly in legal battles with some of Italy's most powerful men. He first won the case of diverting the ancient road from his farm supported by Italia Nostra. Later, many more lawsuits followed until the plan to build the giant resort was stopped. For many years, Ovidio Marras continued to live in his "hut" on the coast, until his health forced him to return to the village to his loved ones.
reaction
Numerous environmental associations, but also ordinary citizens who wanted to send a message on social networks to remember what was defined as "David who defeated Goliath" expressed their condolences for his passing away. "With his choices - said Maria Paola Morittu, from Italia Nostra, who joined him in the battle - he defended the right of everyone to live their lives in harmony with nature". This was also remembered by other environmentalist groups, such as "Sardinia Rubata", which fights every day in defense of the environmental heritage, starting with the fight against the theft of sand. /Ilsole24hours
