Kamala Harris has climbed the podium at Howard University in Washington to deliver her speech.
The vice president was met with a lot of applause as she smiled at her supporters accompanied by the song "Freedom" by Beyoncé, which also became the campaign anthem.
"My heart is full today," was the start of Harris' speech. "Full of gratitude for the trust you have given me, full of love for our country and full of determination."
She goes on to say that the election result was not what she had hoped for and fought for.
"The light of the promised America will shine forever as long as we never give up and as long as we keep fighting."
Harris thanked her family, her husband, whom she calls "Dear Doug," Jill and Joe Biden, and Tim Walz and his family. She also doesn't forget the team, volunteers, poll workers and local election officials.
"I am very proud of the race we did and how we managed it."
Kamala Harris tells supporters her campaign was about "building communities and coalitions" and is proud of the race she and the team ran. The vice president says that her team is united in their love for America, enthusiasm and happiness in the fight for the country's future.
Harris adds that the campaign was built on the premise that Americans have more in common than they divide.
"I know that the supporters are experiencing and feeling a lot of emotions right now. I understand," says Harris. But she continues that "we have to accept the results of these elections" while confirming that she spoke with Trump congratulating him on his victory.
She states that she told him that they will follow "a peaceful transfer of power" and that she will help in this process.
"A fundamental tenet of democracy is to accept the outcome," says Harris. "This distinguishes democracy from tyranny. Anyone who seeks people's trust must accept it. We are loyal to the US Constitution, God and our conscience. He will not give up the fight for American women to decide about their bodies, democracy, equal justice. It's ok to feel disappointed. Sometimes the fight takes time, but that doesn't mean we won't win.
Never give up on making the world a better place. You have the power and don't listen to others when they say it's impossible because no one has done it," said Harris.
