In person, he appears less and less often: his prime minister replaces him on official occasions.
Even local television services are giving him less space than in the past: in June he appeared on screens only ten times, a year ago there was not a day when people did not talk about him.
Even his social media profiles are updated less frequently. All the evidence would confirm a rumor: the health of Ramzan Kadyrov, the man who has been the lord of Chechnya for almost twenty years, is steadily deteriorating.
It's news that has been circulating for some time: Kadyrov, 48, is said to be suffering from a serious pancreatic disease, which he was diagnosed with in 2019.
However, for months, the symptoms have worsened. And, as a result, rumors of a possible change at the head of the Caucasian republic have become more persistent.
And Kadyrov himself – in a video released in May, wearing a black hoodie – did not completely deny this: “All men walk the path of illness and death. Only He who gave us breath can decide how long we will live.”
Whether he is asking himself this question is best shown by the meteoric rise of his sons to positions of increasing importance.
Who better than them to take over his legacy and power?
Kadyrov conquered it with violence and blood when he was not even thirty years old, and then consolidated it by the same means. To the point of becoming the true master of what, at least on paper, remains in fact part of Russian territory. Vladimir Putin did not stop him.
On the contrary: he has always given Kadyrov special treatment compared to his colleagues.
And so, in less than two decades, he was able to organize a veritable personal army, impose strict religious laws – Chechnya is populated almost entirely by Muslims – incompatible with Russian ones, and even publicly oppose the man from the Kremlin. And despite everything, he continues to finance it generously in exchange for stability in the region.
To fulfill this task, continuity offers the strongest guarantees. Therefore, in the not-too-distant future, one of Kadyrov's fourteen children may be called upon to succeed their father.
One, above all, is the favorite: young Adam, very young. He is not yet 18 years old, he is not the first child. He became famous when he was 15 for a video in which he beat a prisoner in a Grozny prison.
To reward him, his father made him: commander of his security service; commander of the police forces; Secretary of the Security Council of the Republic.
He later named him the “Hero of Chechnya” and awarded him six medals for military bravery, even though he never set foot on the front.
Finally, a week ago, the wedding: Adam married a girl his own age. Only her name, Medni, is known, revealed by one of Kadyrov's daughters.
A grand ceremony, compared to that of the brothers, was celebrated in Achmat-Yurt, the family's hometown.
The protagonist arrived aboard a Mercedes SUV worth 160 thousand euros (the import of which into Russia violates sanctions), holding a diamond-encrusted watch worth 2 million euros.
That same day, his father posted a photo on Telegram: the groom in the Kremlin, welcomed by Putin himself.
Below, a message addressed directly to the Russian president: "Thank you for your warm congratulations to the newlywed couple and for your sincere wishes to the entire Chechen people. Your kind heart and nobility are what we deeply appreciate in you."
