US President Donald Trump stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin does not seem interested in ending the war in Ukraine.

Trump told reporters after returning to Washington from Iowa, where he attended a pre-Independence Day event, that he was "very unhappy" with the July 3 phone call between the two leaders.

"It seems like he wants to go all the way and keep killing people. It's not good. I wasn't happy with him," Trump told reporters.

The call, which lasted about an hour, was confirmed by the Kremlin to have focused on Ukraine.

Putin reportedly told Trump that Russia would continue to pursue its "goals" in the war.

Trump's criticism follows a sharp escalation of Russian missile and drone attacks across Ukraine that have killed and wounded hundreds of civilians in recent weeks.

The attacks have hit multiple regions, destroying civilian infrastructure amid continued calls from Ukraine, the US and Europe for an unconditional ceasefire.

A day after his call with Putin, the US president spoke on the phone with President Volodymyr Zelensky and said the two had a "very strategic" conversation.

“We talked about a lot of different things… I think it was a very, very strategic call,” Trump said. When asked about supplying Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine, he replied: “Yes, we can do that.”

"They're going to need something because they're getting hit pretty hard," Trump added.
