US President-elect Donald Trump is considering appointing Richard Grenell as his special envoy on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The news was announced by the Reuters news agency, which refers to four sources close to the president-elect.

However, Karoline Leavitt, Trump's spokesperson in this transition period, has not confirmed this appointment, stressing that it will be the president-elect himself who will make his decisions public.

Grenell, who served as the American ambassador to Germany, then as the special envoy of the United States for the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia and as the head of national intelligence in Trump's first term as president, in the period 2017-2021, has previously called for the creation of "autonomous zones" as a way to end the conflict.

He also suggested that he would not be in favor of Ukraine joining NATO in the near future. Donald Trump followed up with other appointments in the new administration, as he selected investor Scott Bessent to take on the role of US treasury secretary.

He also nominated former State Department official Alex Wong to serve as deputy national security adviser and Sebastian Gorka as senior White House counterterrorism director.
